چکیده

We present a study on low-Tc superconductorinsulator-ferromagnet-superconductor (SIFS) Josephson junctions. SIFS junctions have gained considerable interest in recent years because they show a number of interesting properties for future classical and quantum computing devices. We optimized the fabrication process of these junctions to achieve a homogeneous current transport, ending up with high-quality samples. Depending on the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer and on temperature, the SIFS junctions are in the ground state with a phase drop either 0 or π. By using a ferromagnetic layer with variable step-like thickness along the junction, we obtained a so-called 0-π Josephson junction, in which 0 and π ground states compete with each other. At a certain temperature the 0 and π parts of the junction are perfectly symmetric, i.e. the absolute critical current densities are equal. In this case the degenerate ground state corresponds to a vortex of supercurrent circulating clockor counterclockwise and creating a magnetic flux which carries a fraction of the magnetic flux quantum Φ0.

Realization of φ Josephson Junctions with a Ferromagnetic Interlayer

In this thesis, φ Josephson junctions based on 0-π junctions with a ferromagnetic interlayer are studied. Josephson junctions (JJs) with a ferromagnetic interlayer can have a phase drop of 0 or π in the ground state, depending on the thickness of the ferromagnet (0 JJs or π JJs). Also, 0-π JJs can be realized, where one segment of the junction (if taken separately) is in the 0 state, while the ...

0-π oscillations in nanostructured Nb/Fe/Nb Josephson junctions

The physics of the π phase shift in ferromagnetic Josephson junctions enables a range of applications for spin-electronic devices and quantum computing. We investigate transitions from “0” to “π” states in Nb/Fe/Nb Josephson junctions by varying the Fe barrier thickness from 0.5 nm to 5.5 nm. From magnetic measurements we estimate for Fe a magnetic dead layer of about 1.1 nm. By fitting the cha...

description of the ferromagnetic π - junctions near the critical temperature

Theoretical description of the ferromagnetic π-junctions near the critical temperature Abstract The theory of ferromagnetic π-junction near the critical temperature is presented. It is demonstrated that in the dirty limit the modified Usadel equation adequately describes the proximity effect in ferromagnets. To provide the description of an experimentally relevant situation, oscillations of the...

Area-dependence of spin-triplet supercurrent in ferromagnetic Josephson junctions

Josephson junctions containing multiple ferromagnetic layers can carry spin-triplet supercurrent under certain conditions. Large-area junctions containing multiple domains are expected to have a random distribution of 0 or π coupling across the junction surface, whereas magnetized samples should have uniquely π coupling everywhere. We have measured the area-dependence of the critical current in...

Peculiar properties of the Josephson junction at the transition from 0 to π state

It is demonstrated that in the diffusive superconductor-ferromagnetsuperconductor (S/F/S) junctions the current-phase relation is practically sinusoidal everywhere except in a narrow region near the 0−π transition. In this region the second harmonic dominates the scenario of the 0 − π transition. We predict a first order transition for the S/F/S junctions with a homogeneous F barrier. However, ...
